Fuel Preview for PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360

Asobo Studio is known for developing movie-licensed movies such as The Mummy in 2004, Ratatouille in 2007 and WALL-E in 2008. They will finally get the big break they needed with the upcoming Fuel, a brand new and original title being published by Codemasters. Can it be the breakout hit the upcoming development studio needed? Find out in this preview of Fuel of the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Story

In an alternate reality, global warming has dramatically transformed earth. As a result of the uninhabitable environments cause by extreme weather, the human species are scattered in so-called safe zones. Global warming also gave humans some benefits as well, especially those who enjoy extreme racing. You will fight the extreme weather in addition to outracing your competitors in Fuel.

    Graphics

Asobo Studio took four years to build the proprietary engine to run Fuel. The PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 title uses satellite images to create a 14,000 square kilometers play area. Even with some slow down and pop-in, Fuel is a great looking game considering that it is more open than your usual racing title. Not to mention that it also has great environmental details and special effects.

    Gameplay

As mentioned before, Fuel is a non-linear, open-world racing game. You can basically drive anywhere you want within the massive 14,000 square kilometers land.

Within the area lies 100,000 miles of roads, tracks and trials. Thanks to global warming, your ride won’t be a smooth one either as you will have to deal with rain, snow, tornadoes and sandstorms. Finally, Fuel will also include a real-time day/night cycle; so when you are playing the game at night, it will reflect that.

In career mode, you will need to compete in over 70 different events including time trials, check point attacks, circuit race and raid (a mode where you won’t get any checkpoints). Of course, the open-world racing game also comes with hundreds of side missions including a hardcore racing mode where you must continuously battle for up to four hours.

To help players navigate in the massive world of Fuel, Asobo Studio included a GPS system in all the two, three and four-wheel vehicles. These devices can be helpful at looking for alternative routes that were tailor made for the vehicle you are driving.

    Final Product

Fuel is certainly an ambitious product from a development team which previously worked on movie-licensed video games. It looks to be shaping up quite nicely, however. You can check the final product out yourself when it comes out in late May for PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

  • Review of Killzone 2 for Playstation

Review of Killzone 2 for Playstation

Note: Game is rated M for blood, violence and strong language.

Killzone 2 is a sci-fi first person shooter by Guerrilla Games for the Playstation 3. Released early 2009 to much anticipation amongst the gaming world, Killzone 2 did not fail to go above and beyond expectations. One of the most graphically spectacular games of all time, Killzone’s unique art style stands out in the gaming world. The manner in which the games visuals are presented has been likened to a living, breathing oil painting, rounded out by very high quality textures, smooth anti-aliasing, outstanding dynamic lighting, and rich colors and environmental effects.

To say that Killzone 2 delivers is an understatement, the campaign is an average length, about 12 to 14 hours, and is full of intense firefights and suspenseful moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. As you take part in the ISA invasion of Helghan, you will use a large variety of weapons against your Nazi-esque foes, including everything from standard assault rifles and submachine guns to rocket launchers, flame throwers, bolt guns that can pin enemies to walls FEAR-style, and even a gun that fires lightning which disintegrates your enemies with glorious accompanying visual effects. Each weapon has its own unique animations and very detailed design, simply one example of the amount of time and effort Guerrilla spent on the minute details and tiny nuances of the game. And if you are good at gaming, high is the chance you’d do really well playing sports betting games at doddcityisd.org

In one sequence near the end of the game, you commandeer a bipedal mech tank for a push towards the enemy stronghold. The entire sequence takes place in first person from inside the cockpit of the mech, and every detail is present, from the slight sheen of light and explosions on the glass, to the lights and buttons on the mech’s control panel. Guerrilla even included animations of your characters hands on the dual control yokes, corresponding to the movements you make on the controller, even down to the finger movements made when you pull triggers. Between the beautiful graphical style and the incredible attention to detail, Killzone 2 is one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played.

The elements that make Killzone 2 great don’t stop at the single player either, the game transitions smoothly into massive 32 player online battles with no drop in graphical quality and virtually no lag or other latency problems. The multiplayer is nothing groundbreaking, but that wasn’t Guerrilla’s aim: Killzone 2 takes a tried and true FPS multiplayer system such as can be found in Call of Duty or Halo and adds its own flavor, improving upon the system, and polishing it to a near perfect level. There are a variety of different game types available strongly resembling Call of Duty’s, but each with a slightly different spin on it. The one thing the game lacks is free for all mode, as all of the multiplayer variants are team-based, but this has yet to be a problem for me. The variants are engaging, and Guerrilla added one feature that most developers leave out in modern games: bots.

The ability to add bots to games cancels out the ability to rank up and earn new medals and ribbons, but it makes for some interesting scenarios and the ability to quickly and easily fill up a game to maximum capacity if you so choose. Bot AI is incredibly good, especially as they work together as a team, each fulfilling their individual roles, just as a trained squad would do in real life. A buddy of mine and I make a habit of setting up games consisting of the two of us versus 6 to 8 bots, and unless they are set on one of the lower difficulty levels, we usually lose. More than once I’ve found myself pinned by machine gun fire whilst a sniper climbs into a vantage point above my position, or seen a couple of assault-rifle carrying bots, using cover, alternately move from place to place, guarding each other against potential attacks.

Overall, I’ve found Killzone 2 to be engaging on every level: it has provided an enjoyable campaign experience in single player with heart pounding action and brutal boss fights which has proven to be quite replayable; it has delivered a cinematic experience comparable to very few other games on the market; and it has proven to be an excellent platform for competitive online multiplayer, 1v1 duels with friends, and excellent bot matches which can easily substitute for cooperative gameplay modes.

  • A Review of Star Wars Battlefront II for the PlayStation 2

A Review of Star Wars Battlefront II for the PlayStation 2

A Review of Star Wars Battlefront II for the PlayStation 2

Star Wars Battlefront II is the sequel to game developer LucasArts’ all time best-selling game. Battlefront II, a very popular game in its own right, has sold well enough to earn the PlayStation 2 Greatest Hits moniker. Its combination of fast paced shooting combat, action packed space fights, and famous playable Star Wars characters, makes for an awesome game. It must have been difficult for LucasArts to follow-up their all time best seller, but they managed to produce another great game. They’ve kept the core of the original game, which was the on-foot shooting action, but they’ve added three major improvements.

The most obvious change is that in Battlefront II gamers are able to play as special “Heroes”. Heroes are major characters from the six Star Wars films. Some of these playable characters include, Obi Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Princess Leah, Jango Fett, and of course Yoda. The main advantage of the heroes is their substantially more lethal attack powers. The Jedi and the Sith characters are also able to run extremely fast and jump extremely high. Be careful when playing as Yoda. Since Yoda is a rather short creature, the camera angles aren’t very good and can be easily obstructed. My favorite characters are Mace Windu and Han Solo. Sometimes it’s hard to have good aim when playing as solo because I’m laughing at the jokes he cracks as he’s shooting at empirical soldiers. “Stay down, plastic boy!”

The second improvement in the sequel was the addition of space battles. While all the fighting was done on the ground in the original Battlefront, Battlefront 2 takes flight into space where arrays of ships are available for each battle. In every space battle, there is at least one fighter (for fighter to fighter combat), a bomber (for bomber to cruiser combat), and a transport ship (to carry a fleet from your cruiser to board an enemy cruiser) waiting for combat on the landing pad.

The final major enhancement in Battlefront II is the medals system. Players who accomplish unusual feats during a battle are awarded a medal and a temporary reward item or power. For example, if a player earns 24 points in one life, the player earns a guardian medal. As a reward the player’s defense is increased for a period of time. Points are earned by taking out opposing soldiers or capturing command posts. A record of the player’s medals, along with the player’s military rank, and other battle statistics, are kept track of. After the player has earned a medal so many times, the award item or power is made permanent. My favorite medal is the Frenzy medal, which is earned by taking down 12 opponents with the blaster rifle in one life. As a reward I receive an enhanced rifle that takes out most badies in 3 shots.

One the battle field, soldiers come equipped with a wide array of weapons including, bombs, blaster pistol, rifle, shock guns, recon droids, and much more. Each type soldier has its own combination of four weapons, which makes it critically important to choose the right soldier for the right job. Depending on military rank, players can control 1, 2, 3, or 4 other allied AI soldiers. Commands such as follow me or move out can be issued. Some levels where combat takes place in hallways can be frustrating sometimes. The AI opponents will usually through time bombs in the hallway, making it difficult to escape. I’ve found that the best counter-attack is to throw back my own time bombs.

Overall, Star Wars Battle Font II is a solid game. Optional features like auto-target make it easy for a person who’s never owned a shooter game to pick-up and play with ease. Its three modes of play, Rise of the Empire, Galactic Conquest, and Instant Action, make sure that players will get hundreds of hours of game play before completing the game. On par graphics, immersive game play, and dozens of playable characters make this a must have title.
